Board of Supervisors Approves 16% Real Estate Tax Increase!

On a cold and windy Monday, the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors provided little warmth for the cause of liberty, as they passed a 12 cent increase in the real estate tax rate for the taxpayers of our county. Three Republicans, Gary Creed, Jim Politis, and Chris Tuck held fast and voted NAY, but were outnumbered by their free spending colleagues (all four Democrats) who approve this historic increase. Supervisor Tuck even prepared a wonderful, well thought out, and impressive 5 minute power point presentation showing how we could use monies from a multi-million dollar reserve fund to reduce the INCREASE to 10 cents. However, the big spenders were dismissive of his facts and showed their true colors by approving the 12 cent measure. Our new rate will be 87 cents per hundred of assessed value. Around 30 citizen patriots showed up, many showing support for a lower tax hike by wearing red shirts. A dozen or so spoke in opposition to the increase. However we were outnumbered by over 100 green $shirted “educators” who were also present. About a third of them spoke in favor of the increase, bolstering the spending spree.

The NRV Tea Party appreciates the support of the citizen patriots who braved the blustery weather outside the building only to face the arrogance of officals elected to serve the public, not just employees.

Thank you for showing up and voicing your opinion. Perhaps if we had more folks showing up on our side of the debate, the outcome may have been different.

Next month, when the tax bills arrive in everyone’s mailbox, maybe we will see more participation in our cause for liberty!

Every dollar taken out of your pocket by the government is one less dollar YOU have to choose where, when, and on whom to spend.

Fair Tax Virtual Storm the Hill

The Fair Tax Virtual Storm the Hill will begin the afternoon of April 16 and continue through April 17. We encourage everyone to call their Representatives and Senators — you may want to send an email and/or a fax in addition to the phone call.
You can call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at (202)224-3121 and ask for your senators’ and/or representative’s office.

Remember that telephone calls are usually taken by a staff member, not the member of Congress. Ask to speak with the tax aid or the legislative aid. (Make a note of the name of the person you speak with and note their position, example tax aid, so you can follow up with the person at a later date)

After identifying yourself, tell the aide you would like to leave a brief message, such as: “Please tell Senator/Representative (Name) to actively support (S.13/H.R. 25).”

You will also want to state reasons for your support for the bill. Ask for your senators’ or representative’s position on the bill. You may also request a written response to your telephone call.

If your Congressman is already a cosponsor, you can ask for their plans to promote the Fair Tax.

To call your Congressman’s office directly or to look up the name of your member of congress go to: www.ContactingtheCongress.org This site also has local offices, fax numbers, etc.

A brief visit to your Congressmen’s local office with a short letter is also a wonderful addition to your phone call.

There is still time to register for the National Fair Tax Grassroots Town Hall,
April 14 & 15.
For more information or to register go to: www.fairtaxnation.org

Please use the “Tell a Friend” link to pass this Alert on to your Friends and Family

Help us grow the Fair Tax Grassroots through FairTaxNation.org

We have to stop this Montgomery County tax madness. We need you at the Public Hearing Thursday night March 29th! This is a public hearing and the PUBLIC MUST BE HEARD! Bring as many friends and neighbors as you can possibly alert!!!

CAN YOU STAND AN INCREASE OF 16 % on top of last year 6% increase????

YOUR HOUSE & THE STORES YOU PATRONIZE WILL BE AFFECTED. THE PRICE OF THE PRODUCTS YOU PURCHASE WILL INCREASE, AS WELL AS THE TAXES ON YOUR HOME. IF YOU RENT, YOUR LANDLORD WILL PASS ON THE INCREASE TO YOU.

Email us at nrvteaparty@gmail.com for the file for complete budget summary and the Ppt. file of the proposed budget.

It is outrageous that 70 Percent of our entire county budget is for schools alone and that 15% of our annual expenses are to pay off debt. The county has increased debt by about 600 % over the last decade and is continuing this debt escalation without cutting budgets and only expanding budgets each year.

You don’t have to speak-just being there will send a message. If you bring a short written statement to read all the better as the board tends to respond only to the public comment pressure.

The email below from a member explains how important it is that you attend the public hearing.

I am writing to seek your help in opposing those who would have our real estate taxes rise dramatically. Groups such as Occupy Blacksburg and the School Board and parent teacher association are opposed to cost-cutting measures that any sensible budget process would use to contain costs and improve efficiency. If unopposed, their budget demands could help raise our current rate from 75 cents to as high as 87 cents. (oringinally 99 cents now capped at 87 cents which is 16 percent and still hundreds or even thousands of dollar increase to homes and businesses)

I feel that the Board of Supervisors has grown accustomed to meeting budget requests rather than absolute needs. It has become all too easy to raise taxes each year. There seems to be minimal assessment of real needs, poor planning for the future, minimal supervision of expenditures, and reporting units are not asked to submit balanced budgets. This approach must be stopped if we are to avoid running into severe financial problems in the near future.

I urge you to attend the Board of Supervisors Puplic Hearing at 6pm, Thursday March 29 at the Montgomery County Government Center, 755 Roanoke Street, Christiansburg. You don’t have to speak, (but even better please bring your short written comment to read just stating why that you oppose this drastic and unjustified tax hike) The voices of all citizens as well as those businesses with business and budgeting experience will help our effort. The main thing is that we get a strong turnout to let the BOS know we vehemently oppose this huge tax hike..

Please pass on this message to others who share our views. We need a huge turnout.
